2014 will be a great winter – and not just because of the expected snow. If you take a look at the ski area event calendars, it is quite obvious that there is a lot going on this season. Party animals and snow fans should not miss out on these top 10 events in the Alps this winter.

This huge concert is the classic season opening event for the party hotspot Ischgl. This year, British superstar James Blunt will kick-off the season, bringing songs from his new album “Moon Landing” with him. As always, the concert takes place on the open-air stage on the Idalp, and admittance is free for anyone with a ski pass valid for several days. All other visitors can get a one-day ski pass for € 60, or a two-day ski pass for € 88. Ischgl* 29 November 2014

A week of full throttle, both on and off the pistes – that is what visitors to the legendary SnowTrex season opening can expect. The hotspot of the event is once again Les 2 Alpes, the largest glacier ski area in France, with altitudes of up to 3,600 metres, snow parks and great powder snow runs. In addition to excellent skiing experiences, guests can also look forward to an open-air après ski area with BBQ station and mulled wine, live concerts with cover band “XTREME”, fun competitions in the snow and much more. Exactly 50 years has passed since The Beatles stood on skis in Obertauern to shoot scenes for their musical film “Help”. This year, the legends will be celebrated during the event “A Tribute to The Beatles”, which takes place at the same time as the 2014/15 season opening. The highlight of the programme is the Beatles Tribute Concert with “The Elvis of the Alpes” – Andreas Galibier – and the Beatles cover band “The Backwards”. Tickets are either € 38 in advance, or € 48 at the door. Obertauern *29 November 2014

A huge racing and party event is going to take place in the centre of Saalbach. At the “Swatch Snow Mobile” event, 24 teams will take part in training, qualifying, and finally – in the big race. Contrary to what one might think, the snowmobiles do not race high up in the mountains, but rather right through the village centre. “Ö3 Race-Party” and several live bands help set the party mood. The entrance is free for spectators and party-hungry visitors alike. Saalbach-Hinterglemm* 5 – 8 December 2014

This year’s season opening in the Sexten Dolomites is connected to another special occasion: the opening will coincide with the celebration of the merger of the two ski mountains Helm and Rotwand through the Stiergarten, as well as the inauguration of the new “Vierschach-Sextner Dolomiten” train station. At the valley station of the Helm lift in Vierschach, Irish musician and “The Voice of Germany” jury member Rea Garvey will perform. Also performing are Abba cover band “Abba99”, Marc Pircher and Southern Tyrolean band “4Twenty”. Fireworks will round off the open air programme. Later on, several internationally known DJs will keep the party going in the “Punka” service building. Tickets for the full event are available at € 42. Vierschach-Helm* 29 November 2014

Arguably one of the most spectacular events in the Alps will be arranged for the third time in Mayrhofen. During the “Rise & Fall” relay competition, 50 teams of four will compete in four different disciplines. First off are ski climbing and mountainbiking (“Rise”), followed by paragliding and skiing or snowboarding (“Fall”). The winning team collects € 4,000. Admission is free for spectators. In addition to the races, spectators can enjoy an acrobatic show performed by four-time breakdancing world champions “Flying Steps”. Mayrhofen-Hippach* 13 December 2014

In Sölden, the club atmosphere thrives on the pistes during the whole season. The kick-off party “Maxx Mountain Party” in the fun zone at Giggijoch (2,300 m) takes place on 29th November 2014 with first-class DJ entertainment. From 26th December and onwards, electro music and live concerts fill the stage every Friday. The two-day Electric Mountain Festival is arranged between 10th and 11th April 2015, and makes sure the winter full of hot beats gets the ending it deserves. Under the mild spring sun in Nassfeld, the “Snowbeach am Berg” event takes place on 14th March 2015. Everyone who shows up in a bikini or swimming trunks gets a free drink! Swimwear fashion is presented on the “Snow-Walk”, and at the “Waterslide Contest” in the afternoon, participants attempt to ski or snowboard across a 15 metre long pool filled with water. On 22nd April 2015, there will be a “Festa de Cuba” with caipirinha, mojito and latino-rhythms on the summer palm beach. Needless to say, skiing is also possible during all events. The tourist association of Schladming hasn’t been penny-pinching at all this winter, and will arrange a full-fledged festival for its season opening.
